Understanding Hyperactivity in Kids

A normal sight among kids playing outdoors- some play calmly at one place following all given instructions, others are active but still controllable and then there are a few who are very high on energy and just beyond control. Normally, we adults, tag such energetic kids as ‘hyperactive’. However, hyperactivity isn’t that a simple issue in a child and not a quality for parents to boost to others. It’s a major disorder and should be treated seriously. Before any assumptions, let’s try and understand the concept of “Hyperactivity in Kids” better.

Is the child just high on energy or is he hyperactive?

There was this discussion about the energy levels kids have these days and how a thin line exists to differentiate between these two.  Being hyperactive or being energetic are two very different things. Yet, during casual conversations, we tend to mix these two. Often, we all say that kids with extra energy are hyperactive kids. But no! Kids zooming around the room aren’t hyper they are just energetic.

Hyperactivity, medically speaking, ADHD- Attention Deficient Hyperactive Disorder, is a common medical problem, generally diagnosed in school-going children. Most often than not, it continues to adolescence and adulthood too. As many as 60% of the affected individuals continue to show significant symptoms as adults, thereby causing emotive pain. When a child can’t concentrate on his work, can’t understand or even settle down, he/she is said to be suffering from ADHD. This disorder is heterogeneous and it affects 3-5% of all children.

To the people around, hyperactive kids seem to exist in a whirlwind of frenzy and disorganized activities, but the child himself/herself only knows what they are exactly going through.

Why does this disorder happen?

Researchers haven’t been able to properly answer on brain development related queries till now and are yet to identify a single cause behind all the different patterns of behavior. But the main reason for ADHD seems to be-

  • Slow and improper functioning of certain areas of the brain,
  • Genetic or familial basis,
  • During pregnancy, exposure to certain drugs and toxins, smoking, alcohol consumption, and stress. To a lesser content, low birth weight or premature birth of babies can also be the reason,
  • Continuous exposure to pesticides and toxic industrial products like PCB. The most common behaviors, for children with ADHD, fall into three categories-
  • Inattention,
  • Hyperactivity, and

Recognizing the signs and symptoms

Children suffering from ADHD-

  • Have trouble controlling their impulses and are overenthusiastic and bouncing with energy,
  • Can’t sit still, move and squirm a lot in their seat,
  • Are often restless and difficult to keep up with and unable to engage in leisure activities quietly,
  • Easily become worried, frustrated, angry and sad,
  • Have trouble paying attention and concentrating,
  • Talk a lot unnecessarily, especially in between other people’s conversations,
  • Do basic planning, for instance- planning ahead how to spend a day,
  • Fail to finish tasks, follow instructions or do a step-by-step routine,
  • Can’t be fully aware what’s going on around them,
  • Avoids and reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental efforts, tasks such as studies, homework or reports,

How to calm a hyperactive kid?

First of all, know that a child with ADHD isn’t giving you a hard time, instead, that child is himself having a hard time. Try and understand in order to help.

  • Calm and positive parenting may help these kids master their own emotions and behaviors.
  • Create a structure. Routine helps.
  • Encourage exercise, meditation and regulate sleep patterns.
  • Teach the child deep breathing and set rules for meltdowns.
  • Praise the child’s efforts, avoid mild misbehaviors and establish a reward system.
  • Work with child’s other caregivers such as teachers, friends, and family. Everyone needs to work together for child’s benefits.
  • Teach other kids in school and neighborhood to be understanding.
  • Try and channelize the kid’s energy into creativity, sport such as karate, self-discipline such as swimming, outdoor games and nature hikes to soothe the body and mind.
