That day, a forwarded post appeared in a WhatsApp group on my mobile. This post narrated a daughter’s conversation with her storyteller mother. The innocent child has not convinced the way protagonist, a princess, waited till prince arrived to save her. She questioned her mother, why should not the princess do something instead of waiting, simply?
Such is the power of narrative for kids, even if unintentionally conveyed. The least we must do, possibly, is to change the narrative of folktales, according to today’s perspective. Let the fairy tales go beyond beauty, and project the princess with courage, wisdom, leadership and all that we wish daughters to possess.
Nevertheless, same goes for the boys, who need to be told stories crafted around suaveness, the value of respect, and not just the bravery.
